I never met my grandfather Radar.

He came from Stavanger and was a merchant seaman. Family lore has it that he jumped ship in Brooklyn between the wars and stayed in New York City, where he met my Nan Tonny (also from Stavanger). I was told by my mother that he wasn’t home much, drank a lot, and was bitter about his life experiences. He died shortly before I was born.

Looking him up a few years ago on the genealogy thing, I discovered he spent a lot of WWII in the North Atlantic. I wasn’t able to get much detail beyond one of the ships we has working on being torpedoed by a u-boat. Freezing in the North Atlantic swell in a slick of oil and fire is possibly the sort of thing that’ll make a mark on man.

Sorry to go off topic, Dag and crew and doing a wonderful thing here, it’s just the Norway thing triggered some memories!
