Somebody just posted a thing about the Severance cast doing their thing in a glass box in Grand Central and it reminded me of a marketing initiative I experienced as an employee.

I was working at a mobile operator and one morning a bunch of people showed up in head office. They entered the (open plan, glass tower) as a large group and made some noise and started running around. I was in the middle of something so didn’t factor exactly what was going on.

Over the next five minutes, these dozen people swarmed around our floor, coming up to us and pointing at us and looking at our screens and going “oooo” and “aaaa” and “omg” and running around the floor until they eventually just left the building leaving us a bit weirded out.

When the dust settled, it turned out it was the new CMO wanting to give expression to our “most valuable brand” and “we’re amazing” brand position.

He (it was a guy) had hired actors to run around our head office “being amazed by what they saw”. Literally.

Don’t know if any ex-colleagues remember the stunt, but most of us on the day experienced it as undermining and waaaay creepy, and not in the tyniest bit motivating…
