I’m staying out of the “is dead” debate as much as possible (you know, design is dead etc).
But on the UX topic, I recently unearthed a presentation I made years ago to the product leadership of a mobile telco. The point of the document was to take the experience of the UX team and their analysis of the problem space (from brand to technology) and propose a way forward for the launch of a new product (a cloud backup solution for Orange in France).
The thing that strikes me about this document (apart from how old and quaint it is) is the level of permission and credibility our UX team had in this business. The budgets for product launch were very much owned by the operating companies (the global regions) but the UX team had a very solid seat at this table.
We’re all moving a lot faster now, and arguably Figma will have some sort of responsibility in the change, but what hasn’t changed is large telcos or similarly complex organisations and their obligation to meet the needs of their customers.
The multi-channel, research-driven, cross-functional reflection that was performed by senior UX designers may not have been ‘agile’, but I’m not 100% sure we’re doing better by doing faster…
