The AI/LLM pay-per-credit model doesn’t work.
Imagine text messages on your phone where you’re billed 10p per text and when your credit runs out no more texts. Sounds crazy right? Well, before the iPhone UI killed the mental model of a text message as a unit (as in like an email but over a different channel) that’s how things were. The iPhone changed the model overnight from a ‘message’ to a ‘conversation’.
Almost every single AI SaaS tool I’ve tried failed to complete 100% of its task before asking for more money.
Paying for credits is in effect paying for your vendor’s infrastructure. Does that sound like a good value proposition?
No, I didn’t think so. As customers, we want to pay for outcomes. Ideally, I’d want to pay for securing a job. Not paying for 250 grammes of LLM tokens that may or may not create the output of a refreshed CV.
When AI companies can sell us outcomes (and maybe they’re getting close) then things will change, until then I’m not upgrading or paying for tokens:-(
