Our relationship to objects can be a funny thing.
This television set was in the basement of my childhood home. When our family moved in I explored the house and was fascinated by all the treasure in the ‘cave’ (this home was in Paris). Alongside the telly was an ancient iron safe that we tried to get open over the years with no success… Anyways, I decided I really liked the telly and how cool would it be to convert it to a games console or put a modern VCR in it etc…
35 years later…
My poor mother dutifully carried the damn thing around with her for years, and after that I did, moving it from loft, to garage, and back to loft for decades. So the other day I thought ‘enough’.
I wrapped it in a blanket, and drove it over to the antiques barn in Doune, and while no one was looking, pushed it onto the showroom floor and left it with a note on top asking “Please up-cycle me and find me a new home”.
A friend of ours in the village has just seen it on Facebook marketplace, so it looks like it’s not going to end up in the tip after all that:-)
