Title changed to a more clickbait formula because I'm still pissed off my granny was set on fire by bad product usability. Original title was "Should retailers learn ISO 9241?"

CU-2 and I were on our way back from Glasgow earlier today and the phone rang. Granny had a fire, need to check with first responders re smoke inhalation. Get there asap!

A very tense 15 minutes later we were yelling at the warden to open the front door. Alarm over, Granny shaken but OK, apartment a bit smelly but safe and secure...

Am now back home and have calmed down a bit. The fire was caused by Granny getting confused by the digital display on her microwave:-(

Here's what I'm thinking... Regardless of wether appliance control usability is covered by ISO 9241 (it's a beast too big for me to digest right now) should we be asking John Lewis and other leading, responsible electrical goods retailers to only stock heating or cutting appliances that pass a given level of control usability?

The most basic of affordances should surely apply here? If an appliance is hot should it not look hot?

Could a member of John Lewis leadership please comment on this and help us out here? Seems like this is a baton retail should grasp...
