I’m guessing consultants are nothing like lost kittens or hungry children?
We’re not going to get a groundswell of sympathy from the public about how hard our lives are, when we earn significantly more than many people and, for example, in 2018, an estimated 14.3 million people were in poverty in the UK.
I get that, but I’m wrapping up some paperwork from a previous contract I did under IR35 via an umbrella and when the tax year dust settles, the figures do seem a little extreme…
Previous role setup:
- I could not claim any expenses for travel, materials, sust, etc as I am an “employee”
- I payed tax at source. Take home pay = 41% of my billings
- I supplied my own laptop, office, stationary, broadband
- I helped mittigate some employment-related costs and risks from UK.plc
- I have no job security or employment benefits
Now, I try and focus on solutions rather than moaning about problems, but this seems really quite surprising. I’m happy paying my fair share of tax, and I knew IR35 was going to be a change, but does this seem correct?
