OK, it’s Saturday, I need to get out there and start hammering nails into battens… But just quickly, had this chat with my invisible friend last night which was a little bit interesting.
Me: I was reflecting on how LLMs can be super-powerful, performance-enhancing exoskeletons when worn by experts. Less so when worn by non-experts.
Claude: The exoskeleton framing is good because it’s honest about where the power comes from. An exoskeleton multiplies force but it doesn’t supply judgement about where to apply it.
The slightly bleaker version of your observation: it’s not just that the non-expert gains less. It’s that the gap may widen.
The expert offloads the mechanical and keeps the judgement, so they get faster at the thing they’re already good at. The non-expert offloads the judgement too — because they can’t tell they’re doing it — and so never builds the discrimination that would let them catch my errors…
