I was recently asked to complete a skills matrix by a recruiter. This involved completing a table using a “S.T.A.R.” formatted response to a list of named capabilities.
As a reasonably senior person, I was a bit put out by the ask (have you not looked at my cv and case study reference?) and initially considered storming off in a huff…
Once I had gotten over myself, I figured the ability to clearly and succinctly communicate situation, response and outcome is actually pretty important. I guess anyone who claims to add to the bottom line or improve a practice (or whatever big claim you usually make while networking in wine bars) should be able to express this fairly easily.
So my question is: Has this happened to you? How did you respond? Is this “fair enough” or actually a bit outrageous?
