So I don’t want to diss all the warm fuzzies being shared about Bill Bernbach on the passing of his remarkable agency, but I posted this screen grab to my blog many years ago. I was wondering what the best creative minds would make of the internet. I was surprised that DDB would ignore internet culture, would create a barrier to access with plugins. Essentially, the DDB creatives were missing the creative essence of a universally accessible web. At the same time k10k, ShowStudio, and Antirom were exploring what ambient access to everything actually meant. Some brands learned, the Head of Frozen Peas at BirdsEye actually took a phone and blogged his pea harvest. This didn’t sell any frozen peas, but had a cultural impact with the employees at a time their parent company was being taken over. Seeing this guy scrabbling around a distribution centre in Norfolk with his dog made it real, like the culture of the organisation actually mattered… I guess the www was going to be globally meaningful and then Facebook happened and it’s been sliding a bit downhill since then;-)
