This is Olinda, a radio we built for the BBC that lets you see what your friends are listening to. It’s like, we wanted to see what would happen if we put your social network or Facebook inside a physical thing.

One of the things that happens when you run a small business – I don’t know how many people here have their own business – is that you end up doing a lot of things that you’re not really qualified to do.

For example I do the accounts, but I’m not an accountant.

And I somehow end up writing a spec for a USB controller, even though everything I know about electrical engineering is guesswork.

And I design products even though I’m not a designer.

And this is wonderful, you know, because we’re a small company and everyone has these many things they turn their hand to like this, and it continually astounds me how small companies in the 21st century are able to create things that would have taken enormous corporations only twenty years ago.

But to be honest it’s a bit tricky, running a design company and not being a designer, working with designers every day who have been through a design education and really know what design thinking is, as a discipline.

So I do my best to learn, and I collect definitions of design which are useful at different times.

Okay, so I’m talking about design today…
